Yes....purpura is horrible stuff to deal with. I would say that this happen more often than we hear. With the vial used for Wizard...it also killed one other horse (local high buck stallion) and caused a hand full of other horses to become ill. When I was dealing with Wizard's reaction, I was in touch with the researcher who developed the IN strangles for Fort Dodge, and he told he that he was currently working on a new strangles vaccine, because the current IN...was killing horses left & right. Now...that is scary. He was funded by the racing industry who of course losing lots of $$ each time a race horse suffers an adverse reaction to the IN strangles vaccine. IHMO...the strangles vaccine is just plain too risky to use on my ponies. If you do decide to give your horses the IN Strangles, please make sure your horses are the first horses schedule for that day. Do not give any other vaccines during this time!!
