Also do you slap them on at the start of a ride and leave > them or do
you take them off at VC's and clean the legs. Do they let > you go
through a VC with them on? I guess I havent really been 
paying attention to what people who use them do.

Most vets want protective boots off. We take them off, toss them in a
bucket of water. Wash down the legs and put them back on when we saddle. 
There's some brands that have a double velcro closure on the brush boots
that works great. I use Toklats in front because I used to be able to get
them that were shorter, but the last pair was long.
