I think Maryanne nailed this one.  AERC is and always has been about
AMATEUR competition.  When she said, " It's VERY important to remember
what an amateur is...someone who does something because he/she loves
it", she captured the essence of what competition is for the vast
majority of us.  We love Endurance.  We love having "...given a whoop
and raced our horses against a friend".  But we do it for love of the 
sport, not love of money.
