[RC] Water trough Mystery - melanie . o

Fellow Ridecampers:

I'm hoping someone can help me solve a mystery.  I have a 90 gallon water trough for two horses and the last few days I have gone out at night to feed and found the thing DRY.  I can't figure out where the water is going because I can't imagine that, even in this heat (95-ish), two horses could drink 90 gallons of water in less than 12 hours!

Here are the variables:
The pump went out on the well, so I recently switched to house water.  I suspect it tastes better.
I fixed the trough with a wooden frame so that it can't get tipped over.
I removed the hose after filling in case it was backflowing and creating a suction.
I saw the chickens drinking out of it, but 3 chickens shouldn't be able to hold that much water either!  No other critter has access to that trough (that I know of).
Neither horse is working hard.
All last summer I never had the thing go dry in less than 24 hrs. with the same two horses

Everyone put your Nancy Drew cap on and please help me solve this mystery!
