RE: [RC] Beware - overinflated corn prices! - Susan
I agree that something needs to be done
with our current oil situation. However, I hope before our country jumps on the
ethanol bandwagon we look at the cost to the USA. Brazil still has pollution issues some
from the manufacturing plants that process the sugar cane to make the ethanol.
They seem to have a very good handle on their pollution problem but the ethanol
has caused some problems. Also, where is all this corn going to be grown? How
much more fertilizer and pesticides will go into our ground water and air? From
what I have read Utah has enough shale oil to
supply all of the USA
but the government won’t allow them to process it…why not? If we
stop using oil to provide gas for our cars we still need oil for many other
applications in our every day lives. I think I’d rather see funds put
into researching and developing the Fuel Cell car.

Brazil
has been running on ethanol for over 30 years, and their pump prices are half
what ours are.
They derive their ethanol from sugar
cane, not corn, which is a much more efficient growing and refining process.
Ethanol also provides a lower mpg than regular gas.
