Re: [RC] What's in a Name (was: 'Grand Prix' style, etc.) - k s swigart

Indeed - they don't STOP the horse - they mainly
won't give a time since it doesn't matter.

Not true, all horses on a jumper course are timed, even if they knock
down rails. If, for no other reason, to determine any time faults, 1/4
fault for each second over the allowed time.

Anyway care to come up with an idea why this tag was given?

John Teeter's assertion that it is named after the Grand Prix methods
used for Formula One racing makes some sense if you acknowledge that all
you are doing is having a race.

However, extrapolating "completion times" for non-finishers based on
their average speed on the course up to the time they were stopped so
that team medals can be mathematically figured out doesn't make any
sense. Stopping a RACE before you have enough finishers to determine
the winners is absolutely non-sensical.

I don't know enough about Formula One car racing to know if they do that
there (or if there even is such a thing as team racing in Formula One),
but I strongly suspect that they don't.

Even in and endurance "race" it is absurd to assume that competitors
will maintain their mean average speed for the rest of a course that
they haven't completed, especially if the course goes over varied
terrain since even an idiot can figure out that horses and riders don't
maintain a constant speed over varied terrain.

Stopping a race after all the placings have been determined has some
sense to it. Stopping a race before all the places are determined by the
performances of the individuals it is just plain silly.
