Not only horses, but dogs and cattle (to a lesser extent, perhaps.)  Forty some-odd years ago, beef cattle were being bred to a style admired in the show-ring, short-legged and blocky; before too long, these animals were throwing dwarf calves.  (Been there and was a victim of a breeder who was off-loading some of his bad bloodlines.)

It seems to be the halter classes that have been the detriment of the horse for many breeds.
