Re: [RC] [RC] Faking Lameness - Maryanne Gabbani

If it's a pleasure walk and a horse is pretending to be off because they'd rather sleep in the sun, that's one thing. My mare (the one who would do anything to avoid a 20 metre circle) will do that at first sometimes and then decide that going out isn't such a bad idea and then actually act up to be able to have a good gallop. BUT, if she did that at an endurance ride where we are going to be out for a while....I'd look for another horse. It's important to love your work. I had no illusions that we were going to compete in dressage with her attitude.  In fact, I think she's most attuned to herding cows.

It seems to me, whether the horse is "faking" the lameness ( i.e. doesn't
have any underlying physical condition causing it to limp) or not, that
the horse is still asking to stop.

A distance rider who has a pony that has learned the trick of faking
lameness to get out of doing distance rides is a pony that is asking not
to be a distance horse.

Whether the horse can't do it because it is truely hurt, or just doesn't
want to do it because it doesn't like it is irrelevant.  You don't want
to just make the horse do it anyway.  You need to find something that
either doesn't make the horse hurt, or doesn't make the horse fake being
hurt in order to get out of doing it.
