RE: [RC] [RC] How Did You Find Your Soul [Endurance] Horse ? - Ranelle Rubin

Beverly,

I hope you find this to be worth reading, but here goes:

You have met Fellow..AKA: MMF Felarof

I found Fellow on RC 2 1/2 yrs ago, after his father (DR Thunderbask) died. His owner posted she had a son of his, we connected, and a month later he was in my trailer on the way home.

I have pretty specific conformation requirements that I have learned over the years by looking at at least 100 horses with the Hall's. They have to do with length of hip, shoulder, angle of shoulder, tie in of loin, neck, length of cannon bone in relation to entire leg, heart girth, and of course straightness of legs and feet in general. I also want good feet. I don't want a horse that has been started earlier than 4.

There is a look in Fellow's eye that definitely connected with my soul....:) After 7 50's I still feel the same, so I guess the connection was correct.

Color was last on my list, next to last was height..but I did have a preference for not over 15H if possible.

I wanted good bone, and I have a personal preference for a rather stout horse. I recommend you take someone with you whose opinion you value so you have a second set of eyes.

There were two things that impressed me enough about his mind the day I went to see him that I brought him home pending a vet check.

1. I was trotting him out for a friend whom I trust to see him move, and slid on the gravel. He was paying attention, and slid to a stop so as not to run me over..he was just 5 so that impressed me.

2. His owner tied him to the back of her trailer, and being a very oral horse, he was playing with the latch. He got it undone, and while he was being saddled, the entire door swung open with him tied to it. He side-passed with the door as the saddle slid off to the side, hanging by the breast collar. He stayed calm, looked at the mess hanging off his side, and then back at his owner..as if to say, "Hey..can you get this back up where it belongs?"

When I rode him for a short ride that day out on the trail, he had a wonderful smooth trot and tremendous impulsion that impresses me to this day.

All I can say, is look at alot of horses...learn from anyone you can, and follow your heart...

As far as a 30 day trial, I don't think many people selling a horse will offer that, but if you can find it, and it is important to you..go for it.

I don't know what your price range is, but Heidi Sagehill often has some of Michael Bowling's fabulous CMK horses for sale..some even started in endurance. I do like the breeding program they have more than most I have seen. CMK breeding is a great place to start. You can even search for that on some sites like Dreamhorse.

Also, Ann Hall brokers horses and can look for you if you want. It depends on what you are willing to pay. You can find great horses reasonably on your own if you know what to look for and are willing to put in the time. Sometimes it is worth the $ to use a broker..They typically will charge the seller 10%, so the selling price will obviously be affected.

There is a ranch in the Red Bluff area that has nice horses from what I hear. If you want, I can track down the information.

Good luck on your search.

Rather than bemoan the fact that there's been little on RC lately that will
make me a better endurance rider (my criterion for deleting unread msgs when
I'm in a time crunch), I will ask the following question:

(I am seriously window shopping for an endurance horse. Will change from
windows to barns when I finish the book I'm writing.)

How did you connect with your current or best-all-time endurance horse?
Internet, word of mouth, ads on feed store walls, etc?
How did you know s/he was the right horse for you?
Did you make a list of what you wanted and stick to it?
(Yesterday I met someone who didn't want a mare or a chestnut or anything
over 15 hh, but ended up w/ a 15.3 chestnut mare whom she adores x 9y)
Did you get a seasoned horse or put the miles on h/h yourself?
What kind of evaluation did you get besides a pre-purchase vet exam?
Did you get, like, a 30-day free home trial?
Mistakes to avoid?? Other advice and warnings??

Thanks.

Beverley
