Drats, secret is out.

Seriously, as no one else answered your earlier
question: Aussie horses do tend to get rugged (you say
blanketed) a lot more than in the US. For a few
reasons:
We have a much stronger tie to the english traditions
of horse keeping than you. Particularly, we tend to
clip our horses winter coats off, so rugs become
necessary then.
We have a lot more flies than you - anyone who visits
Oz comments on the flies. The horses get just as
annoyed as the humans.
We have a stronger sun (less ozone protection closer
to the Antartic 'hole') so their coats bleach out more
in summer (professional teams like Castlebar and Tofts
always present their horses as nicely as possible).
Horses in the northern NSW and Queenland suffer from
QLD itch, an annoying, sometimes serious, skin
condition which is reduced/prevented by rugs.
And,last but not least, it changes their metabolics so
we can win medals at the WEG :-P

All that said, dont forget Merri visited the two
biggest 'endurance stables' in Australia. Kind of like
if we visited Kanavy's - it is not representative of
the general situation and management. There are plenty
of unrugged horses here in Australia too.

cheers
Dunc
