Interesting. I have never looked at the elevation profile for Tevis. Now that I think about it, I suspect that the start is at a much higher elevation than the finish.

It is a common horseman's observation that down hill at speed is hard on a horse's front end. (I have always trained on this assumption, but never seen "proof").
