Re: [RC] [RC] re: Barbaro - Chris Paus

We can all surmise and pass judgement, but we aren't there in the clinic. We don't really know what is going on in the owners' minds or in the horse's mind. We've all had animals that we've tried our hardest to keep alive when the odds were against them. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The animal lets us know when it is time to let go.

I've kept a horse alive two years too long when he was suffering terribly from laminitis. OTOH, had I listened to my conventional vets, we would have euthanized our aging black Lab 3 years ago. But he's still happy, running, playing and being a dog.

I think Barbaro must still have some spark. Our dog Bubba fell down and became completely paralyzed in his hind limbs. It was awful and at 100 pounds, he's too much dog for us to carry around. After two days of intensive treatment at the vet clinic, they told us it was time to let him go.

We went into town to say goodbye to our dog, but something in his eyes said he wasn't ready yet. I called our local chiropractic vet who said, yes bring the dog in. Long story short, the dog healed. Nope he's not perfect. his back end still goes out now and then, but he's got bright eyes, a great appetite and still loves to play.

At the very moment we made the decision to keep trying, a lot of you might have looked at the situation and said, "it's hopeless, let the poor dog go." But time has shown us that it wasn't hopeless.
