Re: [RC] Aussie saddles - Laney Humphrey

Don't know how wide you need but the Wintec Aussie has the changeable gullet which can be made pretty wide. I have one and when I've want to feel really secure, I've loved the saddle. Took a reined cowhorse clinic and went down the fence in that saddle. Not pretty but I didn't worry about coming off.

Do you know if they come in wide tree sizes?

I have gotten the impression that they mostly fit the narrow / high-withered type horses, and don't fit big-shouldered, round-barrel types.

I've always wanted one, mostly because I thought they would be really, really secure, but didn't think they would fit. The price was a bit of a stopper, too. At the moment, I can only afford to buy one pricey saddle. :)

It seems to me that Aussie saddles are one of those things you either love or hate. If you like a deep, secure seat that really holds you in, then you'll like an Aussie. If, however, you like a wide open seat with lots of room to move around, then you'll hate an Aussie.

I personally love them. I used one on my little Arab when I first started in endurance. It fit me perfectly and I never came out of it -- the only saddle I never came out of riding that little horse. :)) It didn't fit him so well, though, so we moved on to a custom Desoto saddle which fit us both. I've always wanted another Aussie, and I'm seriously considering one for my new horse. I found the seat to be very secure, and the poleys never got in my way, never interfered with posting at all, and definitely helped me stay on when Lakota did his "Exit, stage left!" maneuver.
