Re: [RC] [RC] Aussie saddles - Ranelle Rubin

Beth,

In an effort not to offend anyone who actually likes riding in these saddles (and I know there are some out there, including my 'trail riding only-not endurance" boyfriend), in my opinion they are very uncomfortable. I think they have to be a PERFECT fit on a horse to work..and as your horse's back changes with weight/conditioning/age..who can keep up?

Years ago, (like 15 or more) I was training a horse for someone who insisted I ride in one as it was made specifically for that horse. I hated it, and as far as I could tell, so did the horse. He jigged..stopped when going down anything steep..and his back was tight after any long training ride. Back then, I had a couple of Wintecs, so I tried one on one day and lo and behold the horse was happier..go figure.

Sold on treeless now..FreeForm is my personal choice..email me privately if you want more info as to why.

Do you know if they come in wide tree sizes?

I have gotten the impression that they mostly fit the narrow / high- withered type horses, and don't fit big-shouldered, round-barrel types.

I've always wanted one, mostly because I thought they would be really, really secure, but didn't think they would fit. The price was a bit of a stopper, too. At the moment, I can only afford to buy one pricey saddle. :)

It seems to me that Aussie saddles are one of those things you either love or hate. If you like a deep, secure seat that really holds you in, then you'll like an Aussie. If, however, you like a wide open seat with lots of room to move around, then you'll hate an Aussie.

I personally love them. I used one on my little Arab when I first started in endurance. It fit me perfectly and I never came out of it -- the only saddle I never came out of riding that little horse. :)) It didn't fit him so well, though, so we moved on to a custom Desoto saddle which fit us both. I've always wanted another Aussie, and I'm seriously considering one for my new horse. I found the seat to be very secure, and the poleys never got in my way, never interfered with posting at all, and definitely helped me stay on when Lakota did his "Exit, stage left!" maneuver.
