Re: [RC] [RC] Hopeful prospect? HELP! - Lysane Cree

The price does seem a little high, but they may have priced her high because of the showing she has done - pretty irrelevant to you, but I've noticed that prices tend to increase quickly as soon as the horse has done some shows. Is it negotiable?

She is still young and may have been started young too. I very rarely cantered with my Paint mare until she was 4-4.5 and she still has some balance issues occasionally under saddle (she is just five now)- picking up the proper lead in front and not behind, or not picking up the lead I am asking for. But this is only occasionally and only comes up in the indoor arena where the sand is kind of deep. She doesn't have the same issues out on trail at all, never has had a problem with trotting indoor or out and I do have her seen by a chiro a couple of times of year. On the trail she can give me a nice canter and doesn't mix leads.

WP tends to force horses into gaits that are not natural for them to do especially in a young horse. She might be confused and still learning, and still maturing. She's only 4. But definitely worth having her checked to rule out physical issues as WP horses can also end up with back issues and hock issues from trying to do the gaits sooooo slow with no elevation. Some people use different gadgets like gogues, draw reins, etc. to rein them down and get them to keep their heads down, and of course they might not tell you that.
I agree with Dawn. Pick your own vet to have her evaluated. A ride vet would be even better. I would be suspicious of an over-eagerness to sell...but that's just my cautious nature.

By the way, on the color, she is hot :) But first things, first. Have her vetted thoroughly.

Hmmm...$5000 is pretty pricey for a 4 yr old that you'd be starting from scratch with, doing long slow distance to leg up.  Even if you do a "trade" you're still paying $5000...maybe only half in cash, but the other half is in the value of whatever you're trading.  I'd also look more into why she's crossfiring...maybe it is just a chiro issue.  Then again, a friend has a mare who crossfires when cantering sometimes, and it doesn't seem to bother her when trotting, so?

If you are really set on this horse, get your OWN vet to do a vet check.  They say the vet check is included in the price, and they are eager to bring her half way to meet you.  That kinda sends up red flags.  So if they're willing to pay for a vet check, then maybe have them bring her to an endurance ride, and have them pay one of the endurance vets to do a vet check on her.  But don't rely on a vet check that they have done by their vet...have it done by a vet you choose, with you there to watch.
