This is the main reason for the pulse box and this is one of the things it solves. When a rider enters - his time is recorded. When he is verified the time becomes final and his hold is calculated from the time he enters.

I haven't been to a ride where a pulse box was used -- hadn't heard the term before. Like you said, it sounds like it would cut down on the running around for pulse takers, not to mention having to squeeze between two horses to take a pulse, or having 4 people yell "P&R" at the same time, and having to pick one.
