[RC] Problems with Garmin Forerunner 305 - Aaron Turnage

I took my brand-new Garmin out for it's first ride this weekend and was a little less than thrilled with the results.  =(  Maybe I'm having some newbie issues with it that I'm just not aware of?

# 1 - Mileage was WAY inaccurate.  We rode the Tevis trail from Foresthill to Deadwood and back.  The unit only logged something like 12 miles.  This is not correct, it's about half of what it should be.  Obviously this is not ideal terrain to test a GPS on (steep hills to block reception and a fair amount of foliage cover) but my friends until logged close to 26 miles so it wasn't that bad...  Maybe there is some setting where my GPS is only tracking when it's receiving signal and not "estimating" distance when it can't see the sats?

# 2 - The heart rate monitor didn't seem to be working either.  I never saw it read over 100, in fact it seemed to be in the 40's to 60's most of the time.  I could only wish my horse was in that kind of shape.  =P  I thought the HRM worked regardless of having GPS reception?  Is there some little symbol or something it does when it's 100+ the display?

I'd appreciate the help from you "experts" who use and love your units.  I have Forerunner 305 and the kit from Roger to adapt the HRM belt.  I'm on the archives so can't email directly to April, who seems to be our resident expert.  =)
