Re: [RC] Steph's fallacious arguement (was: glass houses) - k s swigart

From: "Jessica Cameron" <jjcameron@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Perhaps a better statistic would be too look at the
number of horse deaths in all FEI rides (world-wide)
over the past two years and look at the number of
horse deaths in AERC over the past two years and
see what the numbers say.

There are all kinds of statistics that would be more valid to look at
and give a clearer compariston between the different types of
"endurance" than the one that Steph chose to provide (raw number of
horse fatalities) which was totally invalid.

I don't know whether she deliberately chose one that was so totally
invalid because she wanted to con people into thinking that the AERC has
a worse horse fatality record than the WEC or because she wanted to
convince people to look to themselves before making sweeping statements,
or she just wasn't thinking straight and didn't realize that it was a
totally invalid comparison to be making.

It is important to remember that Steph is in the business of promoting
the sport of FEI endurance and that she is being well compensated for
doing so. Whatever her motivations for doing so, it doesn't change the
fact that her opening argument in her "glass houses" post was a
completely invalid argument.

Personally, I DO think that it would be well for members of the AERC to
look to themselves as well as the what the rest of the world is doing
with respect to horse welfare in the sport of endurance (and I think
that even comparing death RATES at endurance rides is probably not a
very valid comparison, since all the numbers are probably too small to
be making statistically valid comparisons).
