Think about how different it would feel to have hard metal in your mouth versus a head hug from a bitless bridle

Ascribing human characteristics or motives to animals is not a valid approach when attempting to evaluate a situation. You need to observe the animals and then draw your conclusions from *their* actions, not from how you would react if it were you. After all, I doubt most of us would consider laying down in the middle of a road and writhing in the carcass of a dead raccoon absolute ecstasy... but then, we're not dogs :)
