I can see where circulating blood levels could not result in an "overdose," but what about the effect on the stomach?  What about all this ulcer stuff we've been hearing about?  Is administering them with crushed Tums/Mylanta enough to protect the stomach?  Does that then impede elyte absorption?  What if they irritate the stomach which causes the horse to stop eating/drinking?  That's bad too....
 
I admit I'm electrolyte shy having had a mare who did not do well with them.  But as a runner I understand their value.  Does it all boil down to trial and error with your horse?  It makes me crazy ;-p
