Hello L gin,
When I read the part about "5 pitbulls chained by one house" and then 
you mentioned "pistol" I thought you might consider this "Lady Smith".

it's very light, fits a lady's hand, will slide into the back pocket 
of your jeans and will stop a pitbull if you take the time to learn 
how to use it. Unlike automatics, a revolver can also be loaded with 
"snake shot". I carry a .38 Police Special when I ride the hills here 
in SoCal loaded with snake shot the first 2 rounds for stinging 
warning shots followed by soft lead wadcutters (target loads) for 
those that might not get the message but so far they always have.
