Re: [RC] Serious Question//Cardiac Pacemaker in Endurance - Mary Ann Spencer
I am a nurse. If I had a pacemaker I would not do
endurance. Too many possibilities to fall on the pacemaker. Lots of broken
shoulders in this sport. Too many chances to have problems with the wiring
I would probably find a very quiet reliable horse to do trail
riding. A blunt injury can cause severe bleeding if one is on
blood thinners.

Question//Cardiac Pacemaker in Endurance
Sharon,
It's important to know what your friend's (and
that of anyone else responding w/ h/h own story) underlying condition or
specific arrhythmia is and what kind of pacemaker she has--single chamber,
double chamber, on demand, constant firing, defribrillator, permanent,
temporary, etc. Some sports are relatively contraindicated by the fact many
people with arrhythmias are on anti-coagulants (blood thinners). So the
risk might be from bleeding rather from a heart complication or pacemaker
malfunction per se.
You can have your friend PM me if she is still
upset after following up w/ her cardiologist and asking him to reconcile
his advice w/ that which is in the
book.
