Re: [RC] pads on back feet - Keith Kibler

Laney, we raise, breed and train gaited horses and I have started endurance on one. We use pads on him sometimes. They are basically high tech nikes for equines.
The pads basically only keep him from getting bruised or possibly from getting an abcess. He has done both without pads. However, I have now had him on Biotin for a year and the last problems were last may.
Imho, the pad issue has nothing to do with "gaited" to my knowledge. btw, noneof our twhs, use them at all.

Padding just in back seems very odd to me. Horses carry most of their weight on their forehand (unless they are upper level dressage horses). If you like the horse, I'd have a very thorough pre-purchase exam done & tell the vet about the padding so he/she can look for hoof issues, especially in the rear.

Ok, I have a question. I am looking at a TWH to purchase and I was informed by the lady selling him (not the Owner) that the owner when she was using him kept him shod with pads in the rear feet only. Supposedly this was to prevent stone bruises?!? A lot of horses I know are only shod in the front and if they are padded only in the front. He will be going barefoot if I buy him, but I'm wondering if there are reasons for this that I am not aware of. I have never owned a TWH, I do have a TW/QH cross who is not gaited. I'm wondering if this has something to with a gaited horse. I would appreciate any and all opinions. My hopes are for this boy to get me started on LD this year. Thanks,
Jen M.
