RE: [RC] Truck tires - David LeBlanc

I would consider the possibility that your rear tires are not run at the
proper inflation level. You probably need them inflated, not to the level
on the door or the level a tire guy would do with an unloaded truck, but to
the maximum pressure listed on the sidewalls. You will get better tread
life and definitely decrease the chance of a blow out.

I have a warning about this, from personal experience. Before you do this,
make sure your valve stems can take the pressure. I did exactly this when I
noticed our fairly new F-550 was running consistently 20# below the max, and
we're hauling a very heavy trailer (about 8 tons fully loaded). So I added
air up to the max, which is typically the right thing to do for this
situation.

On the way home, we had the RF tire blow out. Completely shredded. Pulled
over and changed it. A few weeks later, had the valve stem blow out of the
rim on one of the rears, ruining the tire. A few weeks after that, had it
happen again. By then, I'd figured out mostly what the problem was, and the
tire guy at the shop I found agreed, so we replaced the valve stems on every
rim with the high pressure metal stems. Haven't had any problems since then.

I'm really pretty annoyed with Ford over this one - they had all sorts of
problems with the 'Exploder', and then they go and put valve stems on a
heavy duty commercial truck that can't handle the max air pressure listed on
the door. That was back in 2000, so maybe they're smarter now.

So, before you take Ed's (good ) advice, check your valve stems - if they're
rubber, and your tires take more than 70 PSI, then make sure and replace
them with the steel high pressure valve stems.
