RE: [RC] FEI Championships - heidi

I concur.  Riders who have ridden the horse for many miles and for a long time SHOULD have a much better "feel" for the welfare of that particular horse.  I haven't looked at the requirements to nominate of late, but in times past, there has been a minimal number of miles that the horse/rider team have had to do together.  If anything, instead of not having such a requirement, it should be made more stringent.

Maryanne, I have also observed what you're saying about the horse shows--and to me, it's a travesty.  I don't show horses much (since we market most of ours through endurance) but I did breed and show dogs for several years.  It was alway a point of pride for me to show my own dogs in the "Bred-By-Exhibitor" class--and a real thrill to win from that class.  Too bad horse shows don't have the same thing.  And to put that back into an endurance context--while most endurance riders can't be expected to breed their own mounts, at least an emphasis should be put on the long-term relationship between horses and riders.

Now THAT is an excellent suggestion and one that I'd love to see implemented (but don't worry...it won't be for all the political reasons noted previously).  I've noticed a trend in other equine events (can't call them equestrian at all) here that lean towards the "contest to see who can buy the best horse".   Every November they hold the four day Egyptian national and international halter show for Egyptian Arabians at the EAO, the government stud and Mecca to the Egyptian Arabian breeders. Last year at the internationals I did not see a single horse in the program who had been bred by the owner. Not one. This year there were a couple, but come on guys. What's the point of winning contests with the best that could be bought?  It certainly would appear that no one here has a problem with it, but I sure do. I don't think anyone in the US wants to equate bringing along an endurance horse for international competition with buying bloodstock for a halter show, but the parallel is a little to close for comfort.

Question for the history buffs: prior to say, 1998 or 1999, how many horses participated in/won the international championships who were not ridden by their owner/trainers?

If you require that that rider ride that horse, it cuts down on

the number of horses a rediculously wealthy rider can afford to run

eliminate the buying of the horse the week before the race which is

pathetic to me.
