Re: [RC] re: training miles needed/speed - Sky Ranch

Something else to remember, and even being very much a newbie, I have found this to be true.  Your horse is going to be excited at a ride, and will want to go faster than he will at home on a familiar (and thus, perhaps boring!) trail.  At home, my horse can poke along so slowly that it feels like we're going backwards sometimes, but when he is in a group, it's race time!  He's so sweet, and he's not a youngster (17 yrs old) but he still gets "up" in a group of horses, no matter how slow they're going.

This is why it's so important to know your horse, and to be very watchful of the signs he's doing ok, like EDPP, or not.

Life is short, our horses' lives are even shorter than ours.  Cherish the horse you have.
