Re: [RC] Mane mite (northern fowl mite) - Maryanne Gabbani

Since we really don't have much in the way of vets and/or clinics or for that matter veterinary medicines in Egypt, trial and error is the order of the day. Take the adage "first do no harm" as your starting point and give it a try. When we have horses with cruddy manes or tails we often use ivermectin topically, and we haven't the foggiest idea of what we might be killing. We do, however, know that in our warm weather and with the abundant local fauna, our horses are as prone to fun infestations as we are.

Topical ivermectin isn't going to hurt anyone, so what have you got to lose other than a couple of bucks. THEN you can tell Mr. Stuffy DVM if it works.

I'd try that Ivermect treatment and not even talk to that vet. Give the
Ivermetin treatment a chance to work. If it does, then find out if you need
to treat the property. Or if it doesn't, look for an openminded vet who
doesn't worry about his ego being challenged!
