Re: [RC] Check out National Animal Identification System - marshall Bates

I'm all for the passport program- it makes
transporting a lot easier (and probably make a lot
more folks do it legally.) The only value I see to
"health certificates" is that a least a few people do
get a vet to look at there horses. We in the endurance
world probably have the most vetted equines in the
world and I feel that going to my vet (who fortunately
only comes to the farm once a year for a coggins and
rabies clinic) to be a waste of time and money.
As far as the NASI BULL S---. There is no reason for
me to go to the expense of micro chipping my herd of
retired horses, donkeys, mules, goats and chickens
that will never leave this farm. I truly believe that
once big brother gets this info he will have his hand
in our pockets with a tax of some kind among other
things. From what I read, if an animal dies a
government inspector will be required to verify it.
That's all I need is a rotting carcass in the pasture
on a hot humid day in the south as I await an
inspector from another understaffed agency. Or do I
get to pay a farm call to my vet to verify it? It's
all $$$$$ out of my pocket
The traveling animals I have no problem with having
positive ID's on but I think it is bad business to
expect every event manager to be responsible for
having the equipment on hand to scan all the chips
that are out there (and with the advances in
technology there will be more). I have not been
delayed at any event because of lines to get my
animals identified. Sometimes I have to stop at the
entrance to camp and have coggins checked- big deal.
If some volunteer-often times a non horse person-has
to crawl into every trailer that pulls in to scan
micro chips someone is going to get hurt. Who pays the
bills? Do we start requiring ride management to have
additional insurance and additional costs to pass on?
