Re: [RC] NE region advice - Carolyn Burgess

Juli:

Have you considered one of ECTRA's CTR's as a warm up to an endurance ride?  If you go to www.ECTRA.org you can find the tentative calendar of events for the coming year.  This is how I started.  I did three seasons of CTR before attempting my first endurance in 2004. They are a great group of people and fun rides all over the northeast.

So I am writing for advice. Having lurked alot and wrote some I feel like I
may be ready to plunge in and try endurance, but I would love some advice. I
have read and read and will read some more, but advice from living people
who can answer questions would be appreciated.
First, I have a grade mustang type to start this endeavor with while my
athletic Morab filly grows and continues training. I want to start on Piper
so that when she is old enough I have some miles under my belt. He is a bit
fat and out of shape, but a good guy. We live in the Adirondacks of New York
so our winter does not let up until late March. How should I go about
starting his conditioning? I have a good feel about what he should be doing
eventually, but am less sure on how to start out and would love to hear how
the experienced endurance folk start a completely new to endurance out of
shape horse. I can get him ready for a Prelim event, but conditioning for
three day eventing is alot less intense in many ways. Also I am a fairly
adept rider, but have never done endurance...would it be better to start at
25 miles or jump right into a 50? I am game for either. ( As I write that
Piper is groaning in his pasture in dismay!)
Mostly I would love for anyone in this region to let me know good rides
preferably closer than farther. It seems like this area lacks in endurance
rides! I should start one some day here in the Adirondacks...it would be
tough terrain but beautiful! But I would love to hear what people think are
good rides on this side of the U.S. to start with and if there are even any
close to me. thanks for any advice.... I will try to start riding and
conditioning at the begining of March and i will ride off and on during
February despite temperatures that any sane person would stay inside! Thanks
again and feel free to email privately if you do not want to clutter
ridecamp! Cheers,
Juli ( come on guys this will be fun!)
Piper ( I'm happy being a pasture potato thanks)
Be (Awww Mom I'm not too young to go I am almost four!)
Dasiy ( I'm in rehab and give me a cross country course anyway.)
