As standard ASCII e-mail does not have boldface and italics as
options, we have to use other means.  Putting a word inside
*asterisks* is one substitution for italics.  Making a word or phrase
ALL-CAPS is one substitution for boldface.

I believe it is only "shouting" and poor ettiquette if it is done to
excess, such as whole paragraphs in uppercase.
