[RC] [RC] attracting new riders to 100s - Lucy Chaplin Trumbull

Agreed. Someone I used to work with had a Tevis "Cougar Rock"
photo on her office wall. I walked in one day, saw it and
thought "I want that!!". Two months later I bought my first
arabian.

Note that when I lived in England, one of my riding
instructors did endurance riding and I remember thinking
"Why on earth would anyone want to do *that*??" - but
seeing that Cougar Rock photo gave me every reason.

Agreed - but it will depend on how it is presented.

The general perception of "outsiders" seems to be that all
endurance riders are competitive and race every time they go
out there. The idea that a good chunk of people are doing
endurance for the miles and the trails seems to have been lost.

I met a lady on a recent horse camping trip who was basically
doing endurance training - riding 20-30 miles when she went out -
but when I suggested to her that she do endurance she said "Oh,
but I'm not competitive". Hopefully I can persuade her to enter
a ride in the near future, so she can see how the majority of
the competitors spend their rides - riding against the conditions,
the trail, themselves; enjoying their friends, meeting new friends;
seeing new trails; and spending time with their horses.
