I'm surprised that noone has mentioned training for
distance and a smoother trot. I have had a couple of horses who came with
"English Pleasure" action. After a couple of years of encouragement, their
trots smoothed out as they learned not to waste all that energy.
Note: This is not to say that the conformation does
not play a big role in smoothness.
