Re: [RC] Mare: barefoot rear and/or laying horses down - Laney Humphrey

Linda, I've heard other similar tales so there must be something to it. So maybe Kristi needs to take her mare to a show, struggle through the class, take her out & lay her down right then and there (joking!!!).

Laney,

We never intentionally "laid down" Razz, my little arab gelding. Razz had an "attitude" a mile wide & frequently threw temper tantrums when younger if he was asked to do something that wasn't his idea.

However, he was having a temper-tantrum fit with my husband on an outing early in his training. The wind, flies, and galloping cows & calves were all too much. He bucked & spun & Mike (hubby) rode thru it all. Razz then stepped off the embankment along the road and fell about 2-3 feet, landing on his side. When Mike fnally let him up, he was a changed animal. "Yes sir!" "No, Sir" "What may I do next, Sir?" He still occasionally has a flash of attitude, but nothing like before. This one occasion has lasted for the last 6 years.

Maybe we're attributing more to a horse's reasoning capacity than he really has, but here's how we figure he saw it:
Razz acted up & he was ridden thru it, then thrown to the ground. Gulp! What happens NEXT time?

Jody, you'll read my post about my friend's horse who is not responding to being layed down at all. How long did you have to do it before you saw a change?
