Re: [RC] Mare: barefoot rear and/or laying horses down - Laney Humphrey

A friend of mine, a woman horse trainer who is about 5'5" and weighs maybe 110 has learned how to lay a horse down and has been doing it on her mare with performance anxiety/separation issues that make it almost impossible to show the mare. My friend has been doing it with her mare several times a week for about a month. She was taught by another trainer and they took a couple of weeks to train the mare to go down; Kristi knows to look for signs of relaxation and "giving" before asking the mare to get up. I asked her if it was helping and her honest answer was "no." The mare has good days and then bad days. Last week, Kristi took the mare to the local arena, about 1/2 mile away from where she lives with 2 other horses. There were no horses at the saddle club when they got there and the mare was frantic. Kristi could not get the mare to focus on her. Kristi is reknowned for her patience and kindness with horses and people. After at least 1/2 hour of trying, she took the mare home. This is definitely a one rat (horse) study, but the effects here haven't been as Kristi had hoped!

As I have said here before,I think barefoot rears are the way to go for many or maybe most horses. As for the behavioral problem,if that's what it is,and for behavioral problems in general,I'm starting to wonder:what about the age old method used the world over,of laying 'em down on the ground for about ten minutes? I think maybe Monte Roberts gave this technique, unfairly,a bad name. Supposedly a petite woman can hold them down easily, they don't struggle, and after you let them up they think you are their best friend, because you let them up.(Is it true that their brain is the size of an egg?)I have never done this technique.
