My gelding hopped right into my new slant load with the rear tack, but he's terrified to get out.  I always have backed him out, I think it's safer.  Maybe collapse the tack room and make the opening larger so he can worry about one thing at a time?  (The step up is higher than our other trailer, so the step-down is troublesome to him.)  I just don't want him to think he can turn and jump out.

I think you are on the right track here... I just taught my youngster to load and unload by backing.. she is 2, and I put her in one foot, back her out, let her stand and THINK, then brought her forward, did this a few times, then 2 feet, backed out, stand each time both in and out..... time to THINK... then forward... I backed it up to a bank, now will have to start over with out the bank... but I kept bringing her in, one step more each set of in and outs,  with each phase of the tack and back door closing the space for her, I hope this makes sense, till she was all the way in the st

I also started with the rear tack collapsed and both doors open... then closed one door, then put the tack back up... she did great, I did this a few days in a row...

now I need to do it with the trailer at normal height... I like them to learn to walk out and back out, so the lessons will continue till she can do both well, she has not gone for a ride in the trailer yet...

I put a tire in the pasture and filled it with dirt, a huge tire, so she has learned to go up high and down first on that, then I had her learn to go up on it and back off of it... , this I think was a great learning experience for her...

you might try backing that trailer up to a low hill for a while, and everyday practice him backing out, just doing the front legs... then got to front legs one one back leg, then both back legs.. move it forward, and do it again from the higher height... but do not do his whole body until he is good with 2 front legs, then one back leg, I also use a verbal Que, STEP, when they are about to drop off... or when they are coming up, I use that too... it helps in all kinds of things I have found...
