Re: [RC] Riding Alone - Dr. Q. - Flora Hillman

"...and I was wondering what suggestions you have for tactfully, but
clearly, communicating that I prefer to ride independently. I'm all ears. Dr
Q" ....

Tactful means simply pulling your horse off the side of the trail to a dead
stop, turning around, and telling the person outright that you want them to
please pass. You don't have to offer an explanation. Just stand there,
politely waiting, staring at them. Most people will get self-conscious very
quickly, and move along. You will be free to have the trail to yourself
again.

If they don't take the hint and start up with all kinds of explanations as
to why they can't pass -- and their agenda doesn't fit your agenda -- then
throw civility to the wind. Merely say "your choice" and take off at a
**real** gallop without warning. That will get the message across. The
key is not to let up until they are out of sight. I will guarantee they will
NOT try to draft in your wake again.

I love chatting and enjoying the company of other riders from time to time
-- especially when I find someone interesting to put in my write-ups on the
ride, but ... in general, the solitary trail and riding my own ride are my
two top priorities. Same goes for my guy. He is happiest when it is just him
and me and the trail.
