[RC] Bears, flares and forest fires - Sisu West Ranch

Today we can see a good example of how easy it is to set the western woods on fire. It is a relatively wet spring. There is still snow above 4500 ft or so. Ravalli County allows open burning of trash. The temperature is ~70 F.

This morning a plume of smoke started at about the 4000 foot level, a few miles from our house. I thought it was a normal trash fire, as there are a very few homes approximately in that area. The fire started to spread. Now you can see that it covers hundreds of acres and the smoke has hit the inversion and now can be smelled and seen here on the valley floor.

I suspect that this is actually a good forest fire. Ponderosa pines can stand brush fires at their base very well, and it will get rid of the fuel on the forest floor that allows a fire to climb and start the crowns on fire.

I am just amazed that it is able to continue and spread during a fairly wet spring.
