[RC] dog attacks with a twist - Don Huston

I was doing a nice easy canter on the beach at Morrow Bay several years ago when I passed about 100 feet in front of a guy walking his doberman without a leash. The guy started screaming the dogs name but the dog kept coming hard barking real fast and clicking his teeth. I had miles of straight beach in front of me so I moved the horse closer to the water where the wet sand is more firm and picked up the pace just enough to keep the dog 50-100 feet behind. After a minute the barking stopped but the dobe was running strong so we just kept moving. Another 2-3 minutes and the dog was losing ground so I slowed the horse and looked back for the owner but he was too far away to even be seen. Now the dobe was still running but he was tired so I figured it was time to return him to his owner. >:-} At the canter this particular horse would do a perfect 1 2 3(pull the reigns for a stop) & 4(plant all 4's) which we did and spun to face the dobe who had also planted all 4's and his startled face said "oh shit"! I always wear spurs and now hit my boy with both of them and the chase was on. Within 4-5 lunges we were 10 feet from a newly energized dobe who was running for his life while looking back and making funny squeeky noises, not at all like the fierce barking teeth clacking sound of 5 minutes ago. I backed off right there but kept the dog moving because I still couldn't see the owner. Soon I could see the guy and hear him whistling and calling the dog so I slowed to a trot but the dog was so scared he ran right past the guy and the last I saw was him yelling and running after his dog toward the parking lot. :-D
