Re: [RC] Tip your farrier???? - Carolyn Burgess

How much they make per hour depends on where you live and how much they charge.  And a doctor still makes $500/hour even though he may have $200K in school loans to pay off.  And we don't even thing about tipping the doctor.  I had one farrier that charged me $275 for a set of shoes and he did four horses.  It took him 2 1/2 round trip drive to get to me from his house but he was never coming from his house, he was coming from another job.  Even if you factor in his commuting time, he made $150 hour.  I am subtracting the cost of his materials in the job, not his truck cost, or equipment cost.

When I do my job, no one thinks about tipping me.  By boss doesn't care that I have outstanding student loans or that I have to pay for my car, car insurance, health insurance and the like in order to get to work.  They pay me the going rate for the work I do. Period.

While they make far from "minimum" wage, they also make far from $66 an
hour. Here in an interesting perspective on what is cost the farrier to
shoe one horse:

I just know that the fuel, supplies (shoes, tools, etc.) insurance (truck
and health), and travel time to GET to the next job need to be figured in.
When I look at that, and how hard on their bodies this kind of work can be,
I figure most are doing it pretty cheap. But most of us just look at how
much it cost us, and how long they were there. And good ones make it look
fairly easy.......
