[RC] Knee injury - rides2far

That one was misdiagnosed as a sprain and went
a year before I saw an orthopedist. (gotta love HMO's). By the time
I had surgery, I had permanent bone damage to the ends of my femur,
and had to have about 3/4 of the menicus removed. I'm told that
it's not "If" I ever need a joint replacement, but when, and how
long I can stand the knee before I replace it.

Heck, I've got no meniscus in my right knee. I tore my meniscus, didn't
know that's what I did at the time, thought I'd just hurt the knee that
had a torn ACL so even though I had TWO kinds of insurance, I just wore
my old brace for a few weeks. A few years later I was at the Biltmore
and crawled under the horse's corral and when I stood up my leg wouldn't
straighten out. It didn't hurt at all, just couldn't straighten. After
much trial & error (friends pulling on my leg, etc) I crawled back under
the corral in reverse, stood up and it was fine. :-P I thought the knee
was jumping out of the groove and soon learned when it locked like that
to open the joint as far as possible (I'd drop to my knees and lay over
till my shoulders touched the ground) then get up slowly and it was fine.
Went that way for *years* (yes, I"ve dont the drop to the knees thing
while walking down the road). Finally, it locked up for good. It was a
week before I got the appt for the orthopedic surgeon. He went in for
surgery and ended up having to remove the whole meniscus. He said it was
pretty much destroyed. Guess what? Feels great. Feels better than my
other knee which has never had an injury. Doesn't bother me for riding.
It's been about 10 years since they removed it. The doctor didn't say
anything about a joint replacement. I don't run but that's because my
"good uninjured" knee hurts if I do. Go figure.

P.S. I'd definately let them know there was no insurance before they try
to get you to have an MRI. They diagnosed them for a long time before
they got that expensive toy.
