Re: [RC] [RC] collection question - Laurie Durgin

I just bought another myler...made a big difference in my gelding. He really reacted to the pelham (ony tried it long ago), didn't like the s hack , .Realised the ported myler snaffle with independent side movement is his bit.Moved him back to a regular snaffle, boy, did he fuss. I think the "nutcracker" effect is too much for him. I tried the french link, he was more relaxed but could pull in it on the trail...so went back to his myler ported, hinged withindependent side movement--level 2/3 which they recommended to me.
My mare too gets real tense in a snaffle. She seemed more relaxed in a french link or the comfort myler snaffle, and my 3 yr old sho has only had a snaffle in a couple times, is more relaxed in a french link.... So I chucked the regular snaffles in the can.....
Everyone will get a myler when I can afford them....one more to go....

That's all I use. I find my Arab's mouths to be small, seems like a regular snaffle jabs the roof of their mouths and they fuss. They carry a french link or Myler very comfortably. Now I ride one in an S-hack as well. I'm a sucker-we so rarely have this much lush grass in SoCal that I let her graze when I can.

That's my preference for our endurance horses as well. The only one that
is in a "harsher" bit is the 18-year-old who was a 4-H horse for years and
years and learned how to tune out hands--he goes just fine in a
short-shanked solid port mouth Hartwell pelham, and I understand was
ridden in a Kimberwicke prior to our riding him. (Actually, after a
couple of years of endurance, I think he would be fine back in the French
snaffle, but he's used to the pelham and it's "his" bridle now, so I don't
make him change.)
