One time I did, however, take off at a good gallop when we hit a wide part in the trail and then move my horse over with a leg yield thus opening a hole for the other horse to take off as a dead out runaway. I run along with him for about 100 meters - listening to the rider scream for her horse to slow down - then back my horse off; watching the other horse gallop into the sunset. I find that works pretty well - one more reasons for good dressage training for an endurance horse. Sometimes you need to be creative in how you get rid of tailgaters.
