Re: [RC] Shoes sizes are different, you know - spirittxarabians

I have a purebred Arabian that wears a size 2 shoe. He is 15.3 hands and weighs 1166 lbs in fit condition, according to our Farnum weight tape. He is also large boned and wears a size 74 blanket. I'm asked over and over again at the dressage shows and clinics that we go to if he is half-warmblood. He has a 16 hand full brother that I bet wears a size 2 also. But, I would definitely say they are the exception on hoof size.

We generally keep 14 to 17 arabians in our barn and all the rest wear a size 1, with an occasional horse wearing an 0. I also know of a 14.1 arabian (carrying a featherweight) that is setting mileage records in our region that wears either a 00 or a 000. His owner is a farrier who says that the size of the foot doesn't matter as long as the size of the hoof is adequate for the size of the horse.

Subject: [RC] Shoes sizes are different, you know

In 25 years of shoeing horses, and many endurance horses in that time, I have never put a #2 shoe on an arab.  I use a couple different brands of shoes, but there must be some that are sized larger....just a thought.

My mares both take #1 in front, Equal Terms, has her heels bent around a little harder and she wears an 0 in the back, her feet are a little smaller that Bey Allure's.  A size #2 in the brands I use is big enough and heavy enough for a good size warmblood.
