Oh I agree that the R is for Ride, but then lets remember  the E stands for Endurance, and that Endurance, by definition is 50 or more miles.  By name the mission of the AERC is Riding Endurance.

Of all the rides I have been two in the past 2 years I have not seen an LD BC given to a horse that did NOT finish in the top-5. Why?  Because 25% of the BC score, using the AERC cards is time.  Distance divided by time is?  Speed .  You simply can not do well consistently in BC at LD distances if you are not placing top 5, probably top 3 in reality.  Therefore, if someone truely wants to pursue a Regional LD BC Championship, and that is the stated goal, they must be concerned about speed at every ride to score the BC points to win this award.  Yes the horse has to be well ridden.  Yes it has to be fit.  BUT, NO it can't be 7th or 8th  place.
