I think it all depends on where you live and
how aggressive the hunters are in that area. I
have lived where I felt safe riding during the
week (not weekends), wearing orange and then
I lived on the edge of a National forest that had a resident elk herd and I didn't even like to
go outside during elk season. I had bullet holes
in my house!! Everyone brought their horses in from the fields and kept them close to their homes. It was CRAZY the hunters were rude, left alot of garbage, and terrorized our little town
(but, it was good for the local economy). PP

Back when I was a kid in Western KY, hunters would descend during hunting season. They would hunt on people's land without permission. They would harass people that were hunting there that had permission. They would shoot cows and then figure out they weren't deer and just walk off and leave them . The local farmers could not get the county sheriff interested in stopping it - probably because it meant a little more money for the county.

Several of the farmers got together and contacted the State Police law enforcement arm responsible for investigation. They sent in the State Police and nailed a few of the hunters - a few for serious crimes since they shot toward areas where people lived. They also had a long talk with the sheriff about how it was his responsibility to enforce the law and if he didn't - well there would be an investigation and he might not like the outcome.

Funny thing after the Sherrif threw a few of them in the slammer (with the treat of throwing away the key) - the problem ended at least in our county.

As far as riding during hunting season in an area where there is deer hunting - forget it unless I had a special forces unit in front of me clearing the way.

The last time I have ridden in the forest when they were hunting it was by accident. It was actually black power weekend and black power hunters are suppose to be more responsible. Well I come down this dirt road about noon. I come on a pickup with three guys around it. There were three guns in the back of the truck, along with three coolers and enough empty beer cans to put your kid through college.

No thank you - I'll ride else where.

Truman
