Sigh, you are probably right. Many sports are decided by a series. 
Baseball, basketball come to mind. In track the decathlon is a series of 
10 events.

This just might work. It would not have to be five - it could be three 
or four with the minimum of total time of any horse/rider that finishes 
all the winner.
