RE: [RC] Weight - Nancy Sturm

One of my daughters, who just turned 38 and has three kid, weighs in at a
hulking 115 lbs soaking wet. The horses love her, but she complains that
a 200 lb rider has an edge in the BC judging, assuming all other factors
are equal.

As her mother, I have offered nutritional counselling . I feel sure that
given such a problem, I could probably become a heavyweight in under a year.

Hi I have yet anthor question for the RC..How much weight is to much? I
have a 8 yr.old P.B.Arab Gelding about 14.3 and maybe 900lbs. I weigh 130
lbs and right now I am using a well made barrel saddle I am not sure how
much it weighs...So what weight would be to much? Thank you

Andra, Susan G's Tevis studies showed horses carrying over 30% of their
body weight with no significant decrease in completion rates. Many
good HW horses are carrying over 25% of their body weight. Too much
for your horse would probably be over double your weight, if he is
well-conformed. Some of us would be thrilled to weigh what you weigh,
but that aside, don't sacrifice good saddle fit over a few pounds of
weight. The horse's comfort is of utmost importance, and yours is a
close second, since your comfort affects how you distribute YOUR
weight. Weighing only 130, you have lots of options. :-)

Heidi
