Re: [RC] Pull codes: What do we really want and/or need? - Truman Prevatt

A little more backgound about the analogy. The grades in freshman
calculus were in fact the beginning of the line for the undergrads. The
big whine was (I've yet to understand the logic) if my grades are
posted, I'll never get into medical school. I was at Johns Hopkins at
the time and about half of the undergrad class were pre-med. This was in
the early 70's when getting into medical school was very tough. This
issue actually caused Hopkins to take a needed and progressive step -
all freshmen have only "pass" or "fail" reported out on their transcript
for their freshman year. So the school didn't report grades for the
course on transripts but some how all the med schools in the country had
spies running around checking office doors. Yea right.

At least in the SE you cannot pull without presenting to the vet. I
believe that is common practice. The vets want to make sure the horse is
okay. From the number of starts I don't see the number of RO pulls is
out of whack. We had about 23000 starts last year.

I hate to be be precieved as a hard ass (which I probably will but it's
happened before and I'm still alive, kicking and happy) ;-) but anyone
that thinks they are being "punished" by having pull codes listed have
more problems that John Nash.

For those who have any ideal who John Nash is and feel persecuted by
your pulls listed, I'm really just kidding about the John Nash analogy.

Sorry, the nonsense about hidding the reason for a pull falls in the same whinning category.

There is a problem with your analogy. The grades posted were the end of the line - a done deal - while if the purpose of the pull codes is to gather info, then the pull codes are at the beginning of the line. In the former case, those who received the poorer grades could have absolutely no influence on those grades or anyone else's. In the latter, those who are about to receive a pull are most definitely in a position to distort pulls reported by just not presenting to a vet. Thus they can substantially skew the numbers on all pulls, not just RO's, making any studies based on that data flawed.
