[RC] Ringbone :( - Jennifer Fleet

Well, after a year of nursing my gelding, Shahtahr, back from an injury to his
navicular suspensory ligament, we discovered an unexpected development two days
ago. I asked my vet to take hoof-balance x-rays for my farrier, and when
looking at the films, he saw the very beginnings of ringbone. He is not lame
from it at this point.
We wouldn't have even known it was there if not for taking the films for
something else.

It is very slight right now - just very tiny wavy bumps on the front of P2. I
guess it would be called peri-articular high ringbone. It does not involve the
actual joint right now, and may never. We don't know.

My vet, who I have the utmost respect for, said that even with peri-articular
ringbone, it is almost a given that my horse will develop arthritis at some
point, and become lame. It could be a year, or 10 years. But in his opinion,
he WILL become lame from it. He told me to still ride and compete, but not to
trot up and down steep hills - just ride my horse smart and pick my rides
accordingly to avoid hammering his pasterns.

I've read some articles on ringbone, and some of them say that some horses that
have peri-articular ringbone never show lameness - even horses with advanced
bumps and bulges.

Was wondering if anybody has or had a horse that was diagnosed with this (not
involving the joint spaces) whose horse went on to have a successful career.
At this point, we have caught it early, just by chance. I kinda wish I hadn't
asked for the hoof balance x-rays...I could have remained blissfully unaware of
this for who know how long... :(

Thanks for any info.

Jennifer and Shahtahr
