Re: [RC] glucometer - Barbara McCrary

I have never, and do not intend to ride at competitive speeds. This is not the way I enjoy endurance riding. Joe's comment below sums up what I've been thinking all along, and so far, it has managed to take me through most rides.

A long-time rider and veterinarian told me the other day, in regard to his Tevis finish this year, that he is of the opinion that horses are not made to do endurance. In Nature, they run fast for short spurts to avoid predators, then rest and graze. That we can ask, and get, such a performance as covering 100 miles at some degree of speed in a relatively short period of time, is a tremendous tribute to the amazing animal the horse is.

Horses were created to live on grass and similar forage. I often suspect we overdose them with artificial substances that are not natural to them. I guess some of them work, but I prefer to avoid some of that stuff. One of our horses got into serious trouble because of electrolytes.....either too much, at the wrong time, or both.

Just as I believe humans do better on good fresh food, rather than supplements and artificial vitamins, I believe horses must also. This is not a scientific discussion, just personal observation based on over 60 years of living with, and watching horses.

None of the advanced training or monitoring techniques such as those Tom has
been talking about are necessary to complete endurance rides, although many can
be helpful. Nor are special nutritional supplements necessary. Good basic
nutrituion, a moderate conditioning program, and sensible riding are plenty,
even for 100-mile rides.
